I am currently in a debt settlement program, and it is not a scam. The company is doing super work on my behalf. You can also settle on your own, but I had such a mess with a business that closed, and $90,000 in debt, I felt it was worth the fee to have it done properly by professionals. Their advice has been invaluable, and they field a lot of the crap from the collectors. And they are always available. Even if my particular rep is out of the office, I have been able to talk to someone else that is familiar enough with my case to help. And I do end up calling about once a week with questions, to notify them I am sending over a fax of something I've gotten in the mail, or just for moral support. I can't imagine taking care of my mess on my own. But people do it, especially if their debt isn't as high or have as many accounts as I did (nine in the program). Two have been settled, and another one will be taken care of this week. It is allowing me to sleep at night.

I think that you will have positive results if you find a reputable company and you check them out through the BBB and maybe talk to some former clients if possible.

Hi there
Would you mind sharing the one company you are using. I signed up with "Solve Debts" in San Francisco. They were BBB accredited when I signed up and they only have 1 complaints. Now, they quitted BBB and I'm wondering why? But they are still TASC though.

I would google this company guest and find out all you can about them, and if you find out they are "bad" pull out asap. There are many more out there including this site that can be of service to you.

thank you,
Luke

I am working with Superior Debt Services out of Fort Collins, Colorado. They are wonderful. I hope the mods can leave this in, because I have been reading a lot of negative things about James Lombardo, etc., that really seem to bring down the opinion about all of them, but there really are good settlement companies out there and it is good to share those experiences too.

Creditors have the right to call you and no settlement company can completely stop the calls. However under the FDCPA once the creditors has been told to stop calling you at your job because it can put your employment in jeopardy they must stop or they can get in trouble with the FTC and your Attorney General.

Yes, they called constantly for the first few months, and in the beginning I answered to give them the info that I was in a settlement program. Once I had spoken to all of them and informed them of the situation and gave them the settlement co. info, since I have caller ID I just didn't answer those calls anymore. Once I started getting letters from the collection agencies, several months later, I forwarded them on to Superior and they have been doing the contacting and negotiating now. A couple of them called my elderly parents and harassed them, but cease and desist letters took care of that. In the beginning, I changed my address and phone number to that of Superior, but that only worked for one credit card company. HOWEVER, that company was Bank of America, and I had two accounts with them totalling about $20,000, and they quickly settled both of those with the settlement co. for around 30% without my even having to talk to them at all!!

I was only late for a 1.5 month, Bank of America is already sending me a letter to threaten me about legal actions.

Here it is:We recently received your letter requesting that we no longer contact you about above reference acct. We understand that you prefer not to receive calls, and we will honor your request. However, please understand that if we do not receive a payment of $259 by August 26 2008. We may refer your to outside counsel for legal proceedings. This may result in legan action against you.

Do you guys receive this when you enter a debt settlement program?
